OUR STORY
Sunshine International Arts
Empowering communities through carnival, culture and creativity.
The Art of People
Born from Carnival. Built around people.
Since 2002, Sunshine International Arts (S.i.A) has been creating opportunities for people to experience, participate in and learn through Carnival, culture and the arts.
S.i.A grew from our Artistic Director Ray Allan Mahabir’s journey to India and his early work with charities and communities in the village of Mulana. It was through these experiences that he developed a deep belief in the importance of people, community, culture and creativity, inspiring the ethos behind The Art of People.
Based in Vauxhall, Lambeth, we are an established Carnival arts, education and production organisation and a registered charity.
Our work is rooted in the rich heritage of Caribbean Carnival, which we see as a living art form, a way of expressing identity, sharing stories, celebrating culture and bringing people together.
Through our Culture 2 De Community (C2DC) programme and other projects, we develop creative opportunities with communities and audiences, including exhibitions, workshops and cultural activity.
Our vision for 2023-2028 is to think locally and inspire the next generation through art, culture and creativity.
As an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation, we continue to develop our artistic ambition, support communities and create opportunities for the next generation.
The Art of People: We believe creativity lives in everyone, in their stories, heritage, imagination and ideas.
We create the space for people to express, connect, create and belong.
We work to break down barriers and create conversations between artists and communities in diverse places. We aim to reach people who may not have previously had the opportunity to experience contemporary art, culture and creativity. Ray Mahabir, Artistic Director, Sunshine International Arts
